AY-PE SHOWCASE
PRESENTED IN VR

2024

Developed for the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headset, I created this portfolio showcase to highlight some of the key audio visual projects created for museums and exhibitions by AY-PE (my employer). Initially it showcased large scale, multi-screen, multi-projection, and directional sound projects, including virtual recreations of some of the setwork. The impact and feeling of experiencing these types of exhibitions in person can’t really be conveyed by showing someone a 2D video clip on a phone or laptop screen. Virtual reality offers the closest thing to experiencing these exhibitions in person.

To make the VR experience as accessible as possible, we opted for a gaze-controlled experience, completely hands and controller-free. Onboarding is quick and simple, when a user is wearing the headset, an introduction directs them to look up at the home button to begin. This smoothly and seamlessly navigates to the menu area, providing quick access to any of the projects. The experience can be enjoyed standing or seated, and users can go at their own pace.

The app was developed in Unity using the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), and some projects use spatial audio. The headset is configured through Meta’s MDM platform, locking down and simplifying the headset UI, and providing access to only one specified app.

The experience was launched initially at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York, November 2024, for AY-PE’s promotional stand. The software was repurposed later, in order to prototype exhibition concepts for client pitches, and to test the technicalities of an idea on a live project, before committing to it for real. I will be highlighting more about this in an upcoming portfolio entry for a large project I worked on during 2025.
