BLETCHLEY PARK
PLOTTING ROOM

2022

In April 2022 ‘The Intelligence Factory’ exhibition opened at Bletchley Park, highlighting the important work undertaken there during the second half of World War Two. As part of this exhibition, I developed two large interactive touch walls for the Plotting Room.

The Plotting Room highlights the important work done by the Women's Royal Naval Service (Wrens), as they received, recorded and plotted the positions of allied and enemy vessels and aircraft on large wall maps. Each of the two interactive touch walls cover a different location, the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. Both maps are roughly 3m wide, allowing up to three visitors to simultaneously play in their own area, and one area on each map is at a lower height, providing better access for wheelchairs and children.

Visitors take on the role of a fictitious Wren character, and are tasked with receiving memos, deciding which vessel or aircraft type needs to be plotted on the wall, and then dragging the appropriate icon pin to the correct grid reference location. Assistance is provided when plotting the pin, for those visitors who are not familiar with grid references. As visitors successfully plot each pin on the wall, they are provided with information related to this vessel or aircraft and its current situation. The information is provided as a text banner, or sometimes as spoken audio from a commanding officer, who also appears on screen as a walking shadow.

In addition to developing the software, I also performed the on-site installation, testing and client handover.
