THE BRITISH EMPIRE

2021

In October 2021, Imperial War Museum London opened the Second World War Gallery. I developed five interactives for this exhibition.

'The British Empire' is a large scale touch screen interactive that accompanies a projected film in the same room. Together they provide access to archive images and video, that highlight how nations within the empire contributed to the war effort, or were forcibly exploited in order to contribute.

The interactive has 200+ images and videos to explore, each supported by captions. The content is organised into 63 countries that span 17 different regions. Each country has it's own introduction text.

Developed in Unity's High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP), the interactive provides access to the content through a stylised 3D model of the world, lit in real-time. Visitors can zoom in and out on the globe, and also spin and rotate around it to explore. Select a ring icon on the globe to choose a country, and a 2D UI appears in front of the globe. This provides access to the text and media, and allows full navigation by region, country and thumbnail. Selecting a thumbnail opens it up for a larger view, which could be an image or video clip.

This interactive is installed in two locations in the gallery, each a 43" 1080 x 1920 portrait touch screen.
