WORLD RUGBY
MUSEUM

2018

The World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium underwent a redevelopment, reopening in early 2018. I developed a range of touch screen interactives for the new museum.

'Anthems' is a dual screen interactive. Using a touch screen to explore a menu of countries, visitors select a country to watch a video clip of that country's national anthem projected onto the wall in front of them.

'Being a Commentator' is another dual screen interactive and provides some light-hearted entertainment. Visitors use a touch screen to choose any of five short video clips of rugby matches, each one to two minutes in duration. The video clip then plays (but without audio), projected onto the wall in front of the visitor. Subtitles appear simultaneously on the touch screen as the video plays; these match the original commentary on the muted video. Visitors are encouraged to give their own commentary as the video plays, either by following the subtitles or making up their own commentary. A microphone records the visitors voice, and after the video clip has finished, visitors can view the video again, but this time with their commentary added to it.

'How To Be A' is a classic talking heads interactive, giving visitors an insight into jobs and careers as a rugby referee, coach and physiotherapist. Using a touch screen, visitors select one of the roles and are then presented with a selection of questions about that role. Selecting a question then plays a short video interview with one of three people, who talk about and answer that question.

'Protests at Twickenham' provides access to a handful of audio recordings. Each gives an account, or different point of view related to the protests against apartheid in South Africa, that occurred on 20th Dec 1969 at Twickenham.

'Rugby Pioneers' puts the spotlight on 10 key individuals who shaped the game of rugby. A touch screen menu presents the 10 people, and when any of them are selected, a single screen summary of their involvement is displayed.

'Select Your World XV' gives visitors the opportunity to create their perfect, world-class rugby team. Visitors choose 15 players from a set of 75, each accompanied by key statistics to help visitors make their choices. When the team is assembled, visitors can compare their team against perfect teams created by five real-life rugby players, and watch a video interview with those players talking about their choices.

'World Cup Clips' and 'Rugby Clubhouse' are two separate touch screen installations, but both are the same application, each functioning slightly differently, and with a different interface and a different set of external content. In 'World Cup Clips' visitors can explore and watch short video clips from world cup matches, each organised by country. 'Rugby Clubhouse' provides an archive of both video and audio clips. In each clip, people from all walks of life give their personal opinions and short stories of what rugby means to them. In both of these interactives, the content can be edited by the client using a content management system (CMS), allowing them to add new clips or remove existing clips.
