ZURBARÁN
PAINTINGS
2019
Auckland Castle has been home to the 13 life-sized paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán, known collectively as 'Jacob and his Twelve Sons', since 1756. The paintings hang in the Long Dining Room at the castle, and are now accompanied by this interactive touch screen installation.
The interactive allows visitors to explore all 13 paintings close up in high resolution, with the ability to zoom in and pan around. Each painting contains points of interest with further information about the artistic details and hidden messages in them.
The touch screen is located at one end of the Long Dining Room, and the screen is mounted flat like a table top. Visitors can choose to rotate the interface through 180 degrees so that the screen can be used from two different sides. The preferred side allows visitors to use the touch screen while also being able to look at the real paintings in the room. The opposite side provides more physical space around the screen, making it more accessible for wheelchairs.
