SIDE PROJECT
FOREVER KNIGHT

2024

An isometric dungeon-themed endless runner for mobile and desktop. I developed it as a side project in a few months of my own time. A working proof of concept that offers different input controls, difficulty settings, and is sprinkled with sound effects, music and some visual effects.

A large scale LED touch wall at Silverstone Museum, showcasing future technologies.

 

The menu screen uses a real-time 3D car, dissolve shader and Visual Effect Graph particle effect. Built with HDRP loveliness. Select a menu option to view a video about that particular technology.

Three touch screen interactives and an HDRP visual prototype for another interactive.

 

They explore and celebrate the history of County Durham and its people.

HMS CAROLINE VIRTUAL BRIDGE

2024

 

A real-time 3D game to control and steer a WW1 light cruiser, joining and travelling with a convoy. Created with Unity’s HDRP, using the water and cloud systems, and Visual Effect Graph. The game is controlled using a physical steering wheel and telegraph speed control, which interface with the PC using Phidgets hardware.

My first attempt at game development, a top-down sci-fi shoot 'em up (shmup) for Windows. It didn't reach completion, but I had fun and learnt many new things on the journey. Find out more in this case study.

THE WEST FRONT
BATH ABBEY

2023

 

A real-time 3D photogrammetry exploration of Bath Abbeys West Front. Gamified to encourage user exploration - find specific locations to discover more about them.

 

Uses a Full HD touch screen for UI and input, and a large 4K display to show the 3D view. Rendered with HDRP, and uses Cinemachine, Shader Graph and Visual Effect Graph.

DRIVING GAME

2023

 

A driving game for ages 5+ that uses a physical steering wheel. Follow the sat nav directions (generated using an enhanced A* pathfinding algorithm) to reach your destination.

 

The steering wheel input is controlled via Phidgets hardware. Uses a small touch screen for UI and input, and a large 4K screen for the 3D road view.

DESIGN A CAR
EUREKA!

2023

 

Assemble your own real-time 3D car, with an emphasis on making it eco-friendly. Choose the body shape and material, the wheels and engine type. Give it some colour or put a design on it, then see how high it scores.

Built in URP, with a sprinkling of Shader Graph and Visual Effect Graph.

BAMBURGH CASTLE

Two touch screen interactives, one of which gives visitors the opportunity to excavate two dig sites at the Castle.

 

Presented in an isometric view that can be rotated and zoomed, dig away to reveal and learn about historical artefacts, earning points along the way.

BLETCHLEY PARK
PLOTTING ROOM

2022

Two large interactive touch walls that showcase the important work done during World War Two in plotting the positions of allied and enemy vessels.

 

Each wall allows up to three users to simultaneously interact, and play their part in correctly plotting the positions of ships, submarines and aircraft in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic.

APACHE VR

2021

A short VR experience for the Army Flying Museum that uses the Meta Quest 2 headset to explore a British Army Apache helicopter.

 

I led the production of the VR app, in addition to doing the hands-on development work. Prior to AY-PE being appointed for the project, I created a larger, more feature rich prototype to show what might be possible.

THE BRITISH EMPIRE

A large scale touch screen interactive that highlights how nations within the empire contributed to the Second World War.

Rendered in HDRP, users can navigate 63 countries across 17 regions via a real-time 3D globe. There are 200+ images and videos to explore, each supported by text information and captions.

CODE BREAKER
ENIGMA

2021

A dual screen interactive designed to look and work like a real-life Enigma machine, as used by the German Army in the Second World War.

The experience is not a full simulator, but instead a guided experience that explains and then challenges the user to setup and configure the machine, and then decrypt a message.

A projected, interactive surface that takes visitors on journey around the Pacific, beginning with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, through to the Japanese evacuation of Guadalcanal in early 1943.

WAR REPORTER

2021

 

Visitors use physical objects rather than a touch screen to make selections and build their own newspaper headline covering the evacuation of Dunkirk during the Second World War.

 

The choice of wording and photos for the headline allows visitors to give the story a positive or negative feeling, with 81 different combinations.

A short touch screen experience providing access to 20 original artworks from the Second World War.

 

Built as a real-time 3D gallery, this interactive highlights artworks from artists on both sides of the conflict, and looks at the messages and propaganda that were used.

THE CANTERBURY JOURNEY

A pair of touch screen interactives that form part of the 'The Canterbury Journey' project.

See the physical architectural changes to the Cathedral over the centuries, and explore themes including refugees, the environment and pilgrimage.

LANDING CRAFT
TANK 7074

2020

Two interactives that tell the stories of Landing Craft Tank (LCT) 7074, the last surviving LCT from D-Day.

A dual screen archive provides themed access to 60+ images and videos, highlighting a range of stories from construction, D-Day, post war and salvage.

The second interactive is a narrated exploration of eight themes, each being activated by touching a physical, printed image. Phidgets hardware controls the touch input and lighting of the printed images.

QUESTIONNAIRE

2020

An interactive touch screen questionnaire for a touring exhibition about places, public transport, safety, local economy and recreation.

Answer 14 questions, each can be rated from one to seven stars, or 'I don't know'. When all questions are complete, a compass diagram generates a visual summary of the users responses, and compares it to an average of all other responses.

Explore all 13 paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán, known collectively as 'Jacob and his Twelve Sons'.

 

This touch screen interactive allows you to get close up to the high resolution images, pan around and learn about artistic details, points of interest and discover the hidden messages.

WHAT'S ON TRACK

2019

Developed for Silverstone Museum, this touch screen interactive provides access to events taking place at the museum and race track throughout the current calendar year.

Swipe through the cards to explore the events, each supported with text information and photos. All content is loaded externally and can be updated easily each year.

Build Your Own 500cc Main.jpg

BUILD YOUR
OWN 500CC

2019

A triple screen, three PC networked installation, giving visitors an opportunity to build a 1940s - 1950s era 500cc race car, and then see how it performs on the Silverstone track.

Two touch screens allow one or two players to each build a custom 500cc car in their garage. Once assembled, the car moves to the race track for a test lap to see how fast it is.

F1 CAR SAFETY

2019

A dual display installation about the safety technology in Formula 1 race cars.

Use a touch screen to rotate a 3D wireframe race car, and select points of interest to find out more. Projected on a wall in front of the touch screen, a real-time 3D race car matches rotation with the touch screen car. Selecting a point of interest moves the camera around the 3D car so it can be explored in more detail.

A large scale, portrait orientation touch screen interactive that tells the stories of 21 soldiers who have been awarded the George Cross or Victoria Cross.

HOLOCAUST
MEMORIAL BOOK

2018

A digital memorial for local families from the North of England, it contains names, photos, records and stories of people who perished during the Holocaust.

Each person has their own page in the book, which comprises text, photos and images. The content can be fully edited by the client, to add, remove and edit people and their stories.

Five interactives that explore D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Test your knowledge on what is fact and what is fiction. Choose the most appropriate tank to overcome a challenge or obstacle. Lead a group of soldiers through Normandy. Discovery the 83m long Overlord Embroidery that took five years to make. Explore archive interview footage with D-Day veterans.

MUSEUM

I developed eight touch screen interactives that offer a wide range of rugby experiences.

 

Have a go at commentating on a rugby match. Explore careers in rugby. Search, filter and view archive footage of World Cup matches. Discover some of the pioneers of rugby. Build your dream rugby team and compare it against teams made by other visitors.

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM AIRCRAFT FACTORY

2018

 

Three touch screen interactives where visitors can discover the four key principles of flight, or design an aircraft for a specific task. 

 

'Future Aircraft' is a six screen, three PC networked installation. Learn about future technologies as you build your aircraft on one of two touch screens, then launch it on the display wall, tagged with your name.

CHILDREN'S TOUR IBEACONS TABLET APP

2017

I developed this Android app for Battle Abbey, located on the site of the Battle of Hastings and run by English Heritage.

Designed for children and families, the app content is triggered at specific locations and rooms around the Abbey by iBeacons. Visitors are encouraged to find specific objects and artefacts in order to discover more about them, and hear their related stories.

I performed the on-site install and setup of the iBeacons, and client handover and training of 20 Android tablets.

GENGHIS: RISE OF THE MONGOL KHANS

Two multi-language interactives for an international touring exhibition.

'House of Khans' offers a card-based touch screen quiz. 'The Mongol Empire' is a large-scale, four screen touch table allowing up to eight simultaneous users to explore a content-rich map of the Mongol Empire.

I led the on-site installation and client handover of the first location, at the National Military Museum in the Netherlands.

MONKEYS! A PRIMATE STORY

2016

Five multi-language touch screen interactives for an international touring exhibition.

Explore the most endangered primate species. Learn about primates that are genetically closest to humans. Discover sounds and noises made by primates, and what they like to eat.

I led the on-site installation of the interactives at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Five touch screen interactives developed for Durham Cathedral.

 

Explore the daily life of monks through an illustrated, dual touch screen interactive. Discover the architectural changes to Durham Cathedral over 700 years. Add your details to a pilgrim map wall, and view details of previous visitors. Explore the religious stones collection. Learn about and design your own pilgrim badge.

 

I led the on-site installation of the interactives at Durham Cathedral.

VIRTUAL
HMS CAROLINE

2016

A four user, multi-touch installation that provides detailed access to HMS Caroline, a light cruiser built during World War One.

Users can explore cutaways of each deck and discover 200 points of interest, supported by text information and 600+ photos. The interactive also shows how the key systems (communications, weaponry, and controls) work across the entire ship.

HMS CAROLINE EXPERIENCE

2016

A suite of touch screen interactives for HMS Caroline, a World War One light cruiser, now based in Belfast.

Load, aim and fire a torpedo to sink an enemy ship. Play and learn about semaphore, morse code, signal flags and coded messages. Discover details of the British and German men and ships that fought in the Battle of Jutland. Find out how HMS Caroline works, and explore a media-rich archive. See razzle dazzle camouflage and have a go at designing your own.

WILDLIFE MINI ENCYCLOPEDIA & QUIZ

2015

I designed, developed, managed and delivered this touch screen interactive from start to finish, for the beautiful Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve in North Yorkshire.

The searchable collection of 150+ key local species includes 13 habitats, 'did you know' facts, and high quality photos. A media-rich quiz contains 300+ questions spanning 12 themes. Question types include multiple choice, match the pairs, arrange items into the correct order and spell a word.

2014

This touch screen interactive was for Newmarket Racecourse to celebrate Frankel, the greatest and most successful British racehorse of all time. In addition to designing and developing the software, I also led the on-site installation and client handover.

The interactive is themed around key people and places, the 14 races, and a key events timeline about Juddmonte, the international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding enterprise behind Frankel.

ANDROID APP

2013

I developed this private app for a marketing and promotional survey by Translink, the main public transport provider for Northern Ireland.


A short multiple-choice questionnaire related to travel, with an option to be entered into a prize draw. All data is encrypted and stored in a local SQLite database on each device. I developed a companion Windows desktop app that decrypts the data so it can be analysed.

I developed this private app for an industrial trade show to showcase the services offered by Cape plc.

 

Designed around an oil rig theme, the app offers insight into careers, skills and services.

I developed this private app for a promotional event run by Becks Bier (Northern Ireland).

 

A short introduction screen leads in to some simple Becks-themed games, followed by a data capture screen, giving players the chance to win Becks Bier related prizes.

I developed this multi-touch table installation for a temporary exhibition in Leicester. It opened just a few days after the worldwide news announcement that confirmed the skeleton found beneath a Leicester car park belonged to the English king Richard III.
